It?s something a good race car driver is expected to do, using the subtle cues a car gives while racing around the track to push to the limits.? But now, even an average driver will be able to drive by the seat of their pants in Cadillac?s new flagship luxury sedan.

The General Motors luxury division is introducing a suite of new safety features for the new 2013 Cadillac XTS luxury sedan, which is slated to go into production this spring, including an industry first using the driver?s seat to alert a motorist to threats while driving or parking.

The patented Cadillac Safety Alert Seat generates vibrating pulse patterns in the lower bolster to alert the driver to potential dangers, such as drifting from a traffic lane or toward nearby objects while parking.? Threats from the front and rear trigger pulses on both sides of the seat, while the seat, while the seat can vibrate on the left or right to signal the direction of a problem, GM engineers said as they demonstrated the new equipment at the General Motors Proving Grounds in Milford, Michigan.

?It?s akin to someone tapping on your shoulder in a crowd to get your attention,? said GM Active Safety Technical Fellow Raymond Kiefer. ?Using the tactile sense to communicate crash threat direction provides an effective and intuitive way to cut through the clutter of visual and auditory sensory information that drivers routinely experience.?

The Drive Assist Awareness and Driver Assist packages will also be offered this year in the new Cadillac ATS compact luxury sedan and the SRX luxury crossover, said Don Butler, general manager of Cadillac marketing.

Butler said Cadillac hasn?t priced the new safety options. But he said they will be packaged with Cadillac?s new CUE system and an updated navigation system that is required to make the safety systems work.

According to Kiefer, GM research shows that the seat may direct driver attention to the location of a crash threat more quickly and accurately than beeping alerts.

Safety Alert Seat vibrations can be selected by the driver, via an in-vehicle menu, to replace the audible beeping alerts used across much of the industry.

The seats also will be connected to the XTS Park Assist system and Rear Cross Traffic Alert system to help make parking in tight spaces easier.

?We feel customers will appreciate the intuitive elegance of the Safety Alert Seat, and more importantly, will appreciate the ?good vibrations? afforded by the features linked to this seat,? Kiefer said.

Afghans Want to Know If U.S. Soldier Shooter Acted Alone

In Afghan and regional media, the most pressing question about the horrific killings?of 16 Afghan civilians by a rogue U.S. soldier is whether he acted alone. Today, Afghan officials said that nine of the 16 victims were children and some of the bodies were charred. In an interview with Fox News, Pentagon spokesman Capt. John Kirby said the suspected shooter is a father in his mid-thirties who had been deployed to Iraq twice.

Questions remain?This morning, Afghanistan's largest online news portal Khaarma Press reported that the killings have brought U.S.-Afghan relations to an "all-time low" with President Hamid Karzai issuing an "angry statement" denouncing the "unforgivable?action." Afghan lawmakers have begun raising doubts that just one man carried out the killings. "It is not possible for only one American soldier to come out of his base, kill a number of people far away, burn the bodies, go to another house and kill civilians there, then walk at least 2 kilometers and enter another house, kill civilians and burn them," said Abdul Rahim Ayubi, a lawmaker from Kandahar province. He noted that the houses targeted were more than one mile apart. Kandahar parliamentarian Mullah Sayed Mohammed Akhund told?The Wall Street Journal that local villagers witnessed more than one solider during the night and Afghan soliders said they heard simultaneous shootings coming from different locations. While U.S. officials insisted that there's no evidence suggesting more than one shooter,?The Journal notes that the U.S. Embassy in Kabul seemed to open the possibility that additional accomplices could be involved with a statement saying?"the individual or individuals responsible for this act will be identified and brought to justice."

A trial?In a dispatch from Kabul, the Pakistani newspaper?Dawn?reports the Afghan parliament is demanding a public trial in Afghanistan for the U.S. soldier or soliders involved. According to reports, the U.S.?soldier?was heavily-armed and walked off the base with night vision goggles, breaking into three homes in the methodical killing spree.??We seriously demand and expect that the government of the United States punish the culprits and try them in a public trial before the people of Afghanistan,? Afghanistan's lower house of parliament said in statement.

Boiling resentment With an assist from Agence France Presse,?Dawn reports on further resentment from Afghan citizens. At the scene of the killings one woman screamed "May God kill the only son of Karzai, so he feels what we feel.? For his part, Karzai has said ?The government and the people of Afghanistan demand an explanation from the United States government of this incident." The Taliban insurgency, meanwhile, have vowed to avenge the deaths of the citizens in a statement on their website condemning the "sick-minded American savages" who carried out the attack. Calling the massacre a "blood-soaked and inhumane crime" the group said it would "take revenge from the invaders and the savage murders for every single martyr."?

Calls for an early exit?The killings have also sparked calls for a swift U.S. exit from the country, reports Reuters. "We have benefited little from the foreign troops here but lost everything - our lives, dignity and our country to them," a Kandahar shop owner told the news service. Diplomatically, the main problem a new uprising poses is the collapse of a partnership agreement with Kabul and Washington for the departure of foreign troops in 2014. A University student says?"The Americans said they will leave in 2014. They should leave now so we can live in peace." The 19-year-old adds?"Even if the Taliban return to power our elders can work things out with them. The Americans are disrespectful."

Monsters! A Midlife Musical Meltdown is more a feel-good birthday celebration than a surprise party dead set on defying mortality. This original entertainment by New Englanders is refreshing because it features women in their 40s, a rarity for musicals, but otherwise the production at Arlington?s Regent Theatre sticks to the nice and predictable.

On Sam?s 40th birthday, as she considers quitting her Wall Street job to be an archaeologist in Peru, her inner demons (Apathy, Fear, and Body) appear to torment her in order to make her turn away from following her dreams. As this crisis unfolds, the show wheels out well-trodden jokes about growing old while supplying all the usual greeting card life lessons (live each moment as if it were your last!).

Monsters! premiered in 2006 at the CentAstage in Boston and received two industry reads in New York in 2008. Though the show has been revised since those earlier presentations, the first act could still use more tinkering. The opening scenes, laden with exposition between Sam and her mother, drag and would have been more interesting if done via song, especially since the introduction of each of Sam?s monsters takes up the entire act. As a result, Sam, an indecisive character with a wet-blanket personality, spends most of the time reacting to everyone else?s criticisms instead of taking hold and driving the plot forward faster.

Luckily, the addition of each new cast member, the appearance of a mysterious, possibly bomb-containing gift, and the arrival of an unsolicited, singing birthday telegram girl ratchet up the energy, pushing Samantha into unhinged paranoia in the second act -? inspiring amusingly zany antics, such as having the Birthday Girl chased around the apartment with a bathrobe belt.

The characters are personifications as stereotypes (take, for example, Apathy as a frumpy, constantly eating 40-something and Body as a nitpicking, disapproving, male gay stylist), but the six-person cast ? with agreeable voices and plenty of chutzpah ? grabs onto those few traits and plays them up for pleasant laughs.

In the wrong hands, hesitant and increasingly paranoid Sam could be seen as scarily crazy or pathetically hopeless. Emily Browder Melville keeps her sympathetic rather than irritating by portraying her as sweet, silly, and confused. In some respects, the vagueness of Sam?s character makes it easier for us to see ourselves in her plight and commiserate, which, judging from the giggles and comments from the older people in the crowd, many enjoyed doing.

Other cast members are equally successful at distracting us from the shallowness of their characters. Jennifer Fogarty, as Birthday Girl, mixes na?ve, wide-eyed charm and earnestness with self-confident physicality to portray the ?experienced psychology major? who comes to sing and stays to diagnose Sam?s phobias.

Lisa Beausoleil menaces melodramatically as the monster Fear, waving kitchen knives with glee and ominously predicting certain doom in ?You Don?t Want to Know.? This campy approach fits with her creatively over-the-top, crazy bag-lady outfit: colorful, mismatched clothes, thick, badly applied makeup, poofed, frizzy hair, and shopping cart full of odd props like giant sunglasses and crystal balls. Her circus-act showmanship is captivating, but she stops just short of upstaging the rest of the cast.

As for the music, the cute keyboard riffs and lyrics quickly fade from memory after the show ends, but there are some nice harmonies. A few more songs such as semi-serious ?Half of a Life,? when Sam evaluates her life decisions and goals, would be welcome. The creators favored more of the purely comic songs like ?Dress Up? (Sam dresses in a mismatched outfit), which don?t particularly tell us anything new about the characters or advance the plot.

Monsters! invites you to a shindig best enjoyed by folks who like getting exactly what they expect for their birthdays. In this case, they get a present that wraps up nicely, even if it is a little rough in places: a lightweight, pleasant musical evening the offers those getting old some bubbly commiseration.
