Province needs to expand renewable energy

Climate change expert Mark Jaccard from Simon Fraser University says B.C. is on its way to blowing its emission reduction targets. This concerns me on a number of levels, not the least of which is the fact B.C. has, up until now, been a world leader on environmental issues with the toughest greenhouse gas emission reduction targets in North America.

According to Jaccard, the only way for B.C. to meet its emission reduction targets is through a major move to renewable energy such as hydroelectricity, wind, solar, or run-of-river.? Fortunately, renewable energy is available in great abundance within B.C.?s borders and we merely need to develop it and put it into service for the province to maintain its environmental leadership.

In terms of job creation, I can?t think of anything that would produce more jobs throughout B.C. than a plan to massively expand the province?s renewable energy infrastructure on a scale similar to that of the massive hydro energy development projects that took place in B.C. during the late 1960?s and early 1970?s.? Jobs and the environment don?t need to cancel each other out.? B.C. can successfully lead on both.

Brees, Saints set records, beat Panthers, 45-17 (AP)

NEW ORLEANS ? Drew Brees and the record-setting Saints held nothing back in their season finale, heading into the playoffs in dominant fashion.

Brees passed for 389 yards and five touchdowns, and the New Orleans Saints set a slew of NFL and club records in a 45-17 blowout of the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.

The NFL single-season records set by the Saints (13-3), who head into the playoffs on an eight-game winning streak, included offensive yards with 7,474, team yards passing with 5,347 and first downs with 416.

Brees, who was 28 of 35, finished with a record 468 completions this season, breaking Peyton Manning's 2010 mark of 450. He finished the season completing 71.6 percent of his passes, breaking his own 2009 NFL record 70.6 completion percentage.

Jimmy Graham had 97 yards receiving to finish with 1,310, exceeding Kellen Winslow's 1980 record for a tight end. But New England's Rob Gronkowski finished with 1,327 yards, establishing a new mark.

Darren Sproles had 40 yards rushing, 29 yards receiving and 99 yards on kickoff and punt returns to finish with season with an NFL record 2,969 combined yards, easily breaking the previous mark of 2,690, set by Derrick Mason with Tennessee in 2000.

Carolina (6-10), which had won four of five, kept up for much of the first half but wilted over the final two quarters.

Marques Colston caught Brees' first two scoring passes, making a spectacular, spinning catch with arms outstretched on the first one from 15 yards out.

Colston's second touchdown went for 42 yards, and he finished with seven catches for 145 yards. He broke the 1,000-yard mark for the fifth time in his six pro seasons.

Brees also connected with Graham on a 19-yard scoring strike, and added TD passes of 9 yards to Darren Sproles and 1 yard to fullback Jed Collins.

Graham's TD catch was his 11th, matching a club record also reached by Joe Horn in 2004 and Colston in 2007.

Brees surpassed 300 yards passing for the seventh straight game and 13th time this season, both NFL records he already held and simply extended.

The records come one week after Brees passed Dan Marino's 27-yard-old single-season record of 5,084 yards passing.

Brees finished the season with 5,476 yards to go with 46 touchdown passes.

Remarkably, Brees didn't even play most of the fourth quarter for the second time in three games. As was the case in a 42-20 win at Minnesota two weeks earlier, Brees was relieved by Chase Daniel after the Saints had built a commanding lead.

Although San Francisco's lopsided victory means the Saints could not improve their No. 3 seeding in the NFC playoffs, coach Sean Payton had said during the past week that he wanted his team to continue building on the torrid pace it established during its second-half winning streak. He was true to his word, with aggressive play calling that produced a franchise record 617 yards of total offense. It was the 13th 400-yard game for the Saints this season.

With six touchdowns against Carolina, the Saints finished with 66 this season breaking the 2009 record of 64.

Cam Newton closed out an otherwise spectacular rookie season 15 of 25 for 158 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

The Saints had 360 yards of total offense in the first half, when they easily blew past the Rams' 2000 yardage mark.

Brees passed for 249 yards in the half, when he hit Colston for the Saints' first two passing touchdowns.

Both defenses struggled for much of the half, and the each time might have scored more if not for Patrick Robinson's interception of Newton in the Saints' end zone and R.J. Stanford's interception of Brees deep in Panthers territory.

Chris Ivory gave the Saints a 7-0 lead on the opening series of the game with his 35-yard touchdown.

The improving Panthers hit right back with Newton's 12-yard timing pass to Smith to tie it. Later, Jonathan Stewart's 29-yard scoring run pulled the Panthers into a tie at 17 with 1:18 to go in the second quarter.

That was too much time for Brees and the Saints' high-flying offense, as Brees connected on his long TD pass to Colston with 7 seconds on the clock to make it 24-17 at halftime.

Cairn Oil Exploration Most Successful Operation in Recent Times

The Sri Lankan oil exploration process undertaken by Cairn Lanka is one of the most successful operations in recent times in the region. Sri Lanka's dream of its own hydrocarbon reserves became true after the back to back discovery of natural gas in two wells in the Mannar basin by Cairn Lanka.

Cairn Lanka is a 100 percent subsidiary of Asia's fastest growing E&P Company. Cairn India, has notified the Sri Lankan government of its intention to enter the second phase of exploration.

The Indian company had invested $78 million for the process in 2011. Further investments are expected from Cairn Lanka, as the company plans to enter the second phase of exploration.

This announcement was made following the successful completion of the first phase of exploration, analysts said.

Cairn India is responsible for the delivery of significant domestic crude production from its operated assets across India.

With more than 40 discoveries to its credit date, the company has brought substantial benefits to India and to the states of Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat.

Three out of seven landmark discoveries in India in the last decade have been attributed to Cairn India.

Cairn India's 100 percent subsidiary Cairn Lanka is exploring in the Mannar basin. Cairn Lanka's successful drilling program, the first in Sri Lanka in 30 years - has established a working petroleum system in the frontier Mannar Basin. It has put Sri Lanka on the world hydrocarbon map.

Cairn Lanka (Private) Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Cairn India?Limited, has successfully completed the first phase of the exploration campaign in Sri Lanka Block SL-2007-01-001. The exploration program?involved the acquisition, processing and interpretation of 677 square miles (1,753 square kilometers) of 3D seismic data and a three well deep water drilling program.

The state-of-the-art fifth generation drillship 'Chikyu', from Japan was mobilized for the exploratory drilling campaign in the SL 2007-01-001 block that commenced in August 2011. Prior to initiating the drilling campaign, Cairn Lanka had appointed CGG Veritas AS for collating the seismic data with the help of seismic vessel SR/V Viking II.

Cairn Lanka has completed the seismic program which exceeded the phase I commitment by about 20 percent and in the drilling program the company exceeded the drilling depth commitment by 50 percent.

The operations were conducted safely, in accordance with the highest global standards, within schedule, budget and in compliance with Sri Lankan regulations.

The support of the government and an effective partnership with the Sri Lanka authorities in Sri Lankan, were instrumental in ensuring the successful completion of the first phase exploration program.

Cairn India Limited, the parent company of Cairn Lanka, is listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange of India since 2007.

Cairn India is headquartered in Gurgaon in the National Capital Region, with operational offices in Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan and Sri Lanka.

According to Platts, Cairn India is Asia's fastest growing and world's fourth fastest growing hydrocarbon exploration and production company. The average daily gross operated production was 149,103 boe in FY2011. The company sells its oil to major refineries in India and its gas to both PSU and private buyers.

The company has a world-class resource base, with interest in nine blocks in India and one in Sri Lanka.

Cairn India's resource base is located in three strategically focused areas, namely, one block in Rajasthan, three on the west coast of India and six on the east coast of India, including one in Sri Lanka.?

Exposed: UK university student claiming bias works for project of Israel pressure group

A worker at an Israeli media pressure group used her low dissertation mark as a post-graduate student at University of Warwick to smear a professor involved in Palestine solidarity activism this?month.

Smadar Bakovic claimed that Professor Nicola Pratt had unfairly graded her dissertation. She told a pro-Israel journalist that the same dissertation was passed with a distinction after being re-marked by a second professor. But the paper running the story failed to mention that Bakovic works for MediaCentral in Jerusalem, an agency affiliated with pro-Israel media pressure group?HonestReporting.

The article appeared in The Jewish Chronicle (a pro-Israel paper), first published on their website on 22 December. It drew heavily on Bakovic as its source, but portrayed her merely as an Israeli student, without mentioning her MediaCentral affiliation. A university spokesperson told The Electronic Intifada that the article contained multiple inaccuracies, which he had alerted the paper to but they still ran their version (?Anti-Zionist professor?s low marks for Israeli - now a distinction,? 22 December?2011).

University spokesperson Peter Dunn said Bakovic?s claims were false. It is ?not true that she made repeated requests for a supervisor change,? he said. She asked to change supervisors only once, and, despite that, said she was happy with Pratt?s supervision. It was only when she received her low mark that she asked the university to?change.

Nicola Pratt is associate professor of international politics of the Middle East at the University of?Warwick in the midlands of the UK. She is reportedly active in Palestine solidarity campaigns, including the boycott, divestment and sanctions?movement.

?I did it for?Israel?

The Electronic Intifada contacted Professor Pratt who referred us to Dunn. He said the Jewish Chronicle journalist had also told him Bakovic admitted to being happy with Pratt?s supervision. Dunn said Bakovic had to resubmit her dissertation to the second professor with ?substantial changes? for the higher mark. Dunn said he had confirmed with her new supervisor that Bakovic?s claim this second version was only ?tweaked? was untrue. In order to protect Bakovic?s privacy, Dunn could not name the second?professor.

The Electronic Intifada wrote to Bakovic to ask her to reveal the name of the second professor in order to verify this, but she declined to respond. ?I did it for Israel,? she told The Jewish Chronicle, referring to her year-long campaign to be allowed to redo her dissertation. The Jewish Chronicle claimed it had seen emails (presumably from Bakovic) showing the second dissertation contained ?no major changes? from the one marked by?Pratt.

Dunn said he had not been shown these emails, and the journalist was making an unjustified inference, probably based on an early stage in the process. Dunn said: ?the first mark was also matched by an external examiner as well as Nicola. The university stands by both marks for both pieces of work and the complaints panel found Nicola?s supervision to be exemplary.? The Electronic Intifada asked Bakovic to prove the second version was not substantially different, but she failed to?reply.

University?s?disappointment

Bakovic is listed as the media services coordinator on the website of MediaCentral. Based in Jerusalem, the group says it is a ?free or low-cost? fixer agency that immerses foreign journalists in Israeli?perspectives.

The group is a project of HonestReporting, which once described itself on its website as ?an organization dedicated to defending Israel against prejudice in the media? (?Our Mission?).

Its managing editor, Simon Plosker, is a reservist soldier in the Israeli army?s press office. He previously worked for the Britain Israel Communications and Research Centre (BICOM) and NGO Monitor, another Israel lobby group (?Meet the editors?).

Asked to comment on Bakovic?s membership of MediaCentral, Dunn said he knew nothing about her beyond the academic issues, and that the university?s concern was only to defend its academic reputation. It was unusual for the university to allow a student to redo her dissertation in this way and they had thought Bakovic would be grateful, and were disappointed to be depicted like this, he?added.

The Electronic Intifada put Dunn?s claims to Bakovic via email, and asked whether or not she had informed The Jewish Chronicle she works for MediaCentral. She declined to?reply.

Bakovic told The Jewish Chronicle that she monitored the university?s Palestine solidarity movement: ?I knew Prof Pratt because whenever there was an anti-Israel event at the university I went along and she was often there,? she?stated.

Professor Pratt was one of many academic signatories to a seminal letter in The Guardian during the 2008-09 Israeli assault on the Gaza Strip, which asserted that ?if we affirm the right to resist military aggression and colonial occupation, then we are obliged to take sides ? against Israel, and with the people of Gaza and the West Bank? (?Growing outrage at the killing in Gaza,? 15 January?2009).

In the Reut Institute?s now-infamous 2010 report on how to counter the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement, the influential think tank advised Israel to ?sabotage? the movement of solidarity with?Palestine.

One of the many examples it gave of possible counter-strategies was ?Mobilizing and training civil society partners ? for example students and faculty in academia? (?The Delegitimization Challenge: Creating a Political Firewall, March 2010, p.?71).

If this was another attempt to ?sabotage? the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement, it was an especially clumsy?one.
