(AP) ? Several people called 911 after witnessing events related to the vicious attack of a 65-year-old homeless man whose face was mostly chewed off along a busy Miami highway, according to recordings released Friday by authorities.

Callers only reported seeing two men fighting in the shadow of The Miami Herald headquarters but did not mention seeing Ronald Poppo's face being chewed.

Surveillance video shows Rudy Eugene, 31, attacking Poppo alongside the highway last Saturday afternoon. A police officer fatally shot Eugene during the attack. Police have not released a motive for the attack.

"He's going to kill that man, I promise you," a female bus driver said, urging a 911 operator to send help. Poppo remains hospitalized.

The driver, who wasn't named by authorities, described the scene as she drove by.

"Listen, there is a naked man on the MacArthur Causeway," she said. "He is beating another man to a pulp ? like on top of the man, beating him, the man is bleeding."

Another caller said the two men were fighting, saying they nearly knocked over an elderly bicyclist.

"These two bums were going at it with each other, taking up the whole lane," the caller said. "I think they were fighting or something."

The unidentified man gave his phone number to the 911 operator. He declined to comment when contacted Friday evening by The Associated Press.

A second male caller didn't mention the fight, instead reporting that he saw a man taking off his clothes and throwing them into traffic.

"You can't miss him. He's naked," the man said.

Samsung Galaxy S III gets a Flipboard update

Galaxy S III Flipboard update

Galaxy S III owners starting up Flipboard this morning will notice a new update coming their way, bringing the social magazine app up to version 1.8.4 beta 1 -- the same beta version that started rolling out to testers a couple of days ago. According to the official list of changes, there isn't much new stuff in this initial update, just a couple of bug fixes. Crashes while editing the table of contents or changing the content cache settings should now be remedied, so that's good news if either of those glitches were giving you trouble.

To grab the latest update, which weighs just 2.5MB, simply fire up Flipboard and it should be pushed out automatically.

Sandusky asks Pa. court to delay child sex case

(AP) ? Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, facing trial next week on charges he sexually abused 10 boys, on Thursday asked a state appeals court to review his case and to delay the criminal proceedings against him.

The Superior Court's online docket indicated Sandusky filed a petition for review but did not explain what he was seeking. Sandusky also asked the court to seal the document, which was not available after business hours.

The judge in Sandusky's criminal case, John Cleland, on Wednesday denied a defense request for a continuance and a second request that would have given Sandusky the right to seek immediate Superior Court review of that decision.

Sandusky lawyer Joe Amendola, citing a gag order in the case, declined to comment on Thursday, as did a spokesman for the attorney general's office.

Sandusky, 68, awaits trial on dozens of criminal charges alleging he abused the boys, some on campus, over a 15-year period. He has repeatedly denied the allegations and tried to delay the trial, scheduled to begin with jury selection on Tuesday and opening statements June 11.

Penn State's president said the university has been trying hard to put the child sex abuse scandal in its rearview mirror and is healing.

President Rodney Erickson made his case before a pair of newspaper editorial boards on Wednesday and Thursday, talking up Penn State's response to the massive scandal, which tarnished its image and led to the ousters of Hall of Fame football coach Joe Paterno and Erickson's predecessor, Graham Spanier, whose presidency ended days after Sandusky was charged in November.

Erickson said Penn State is seeking to become a leader in the fight against child abuse, pointing out the school donated $2.6 million in bowl revenues to a group that operates rape crisis centers and to its new center for child abuse research and treatment.

"The university really has been moving ahead. Sometimes it's hard to get that message out," Erickson told Harrisburg's The Patriot-News on Thursday, adding: "It's been a difficult time, but I think in many ways we continue to heal."

A day earlier, Erickson told State College's Centre Daily Times that Penn State has created a "degree of separation" from the scandal through the academic, athletic and charitable achievements of its students and faculty.

Many alumni were infuriated when Paterno was fired a few days after Sandusky was charged, saying the university board of trustees rushed to judgment. Paterno died in January at age 85, and his family has been critical of the way the school handled the situation.

But Erickson told the Harrisburg newspaper that he has a "good relationship" with Paterno's widow, Sue Paterno, and son Jay Paterno.

"Sue and Jay have never left the fold. They have been strong supporters over many months," said Erickson, who also praised new coach Bill O'Brien's efforts to win over fans.

Erickson also said he took part in a "broad-ranging" three-hour interview with Louis Freeh, the former FBI director hired by Penn State's board of trustees to investigate the Sandusky scandal. Erickson declined to provide details of what he told Freeh. He said he isn't getting regular updates on the probe and will see Freeh's report when it is released to the public.

Erickson briefly addressed a lawsuit filed last week by Spanier, who said he wants to force the school to release emails related to the scandal so he can be better prepared to assist the Freeh investigation. Erickson agreed with Spanier's attorneys that Penn State was instructed by the state attorney general's office not to divulge the information, "so that's the position we took."

Though Erickson has been subpoenaed, he said he has not testified before the grand jury.

Apart from the Sandusky scandal, Erickson also repeated a commitment to keep the 2012-13 tuition increase at or below the rate of inflation if lawmakers succeed in their effort to roll back Republican Gov. Tom Corbett's proposal to cut 20 percent from the school's annual share of state aid.

Gonzalez homers again as Rockies beat Astros 11-5

(AP) ? Carlos Gonzalez is heating up right when the Colorado Rockies need him the most.

Gonzalez homered again to tie a major league record, Michael Cuddyer and Jordan Pacheco had three hits apiece and the Rockies beat the Houston Astros 11-5 on Thursday night.

Gonzalez's 14th homer made him the first Rockies player to go deep in four consecutive at-bats. It was the 22nd time a major league player has homered in four consecutive plate appearances and the 38th time for four straight official at-bats.

"I don't play for records. Records just happen," he said. "I'm happy I'm part of a record, but at the same time I'm not thinking about anything else. The only record I look for is our team record."

Gonzalez's big offensive night helped soften the blow of losing All-Star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki for at least two weeks. Tulowitzki was placed on the 15-day disabled list after he strained his groin during Wednesday's 13-5 victory.

Tulowitzki felt pain after running out of the batter's box when he grounded out to second during the Rockies' six-run sixth inning.

"This is the right thing to do, this is the right move to make," Rockies manager Jim Tracy said. "I don't think it's anything structurally bad. However, he's very sore and very tender."

Gonzalez, who homered in his last three at-bats Wednesday, hit a three-run shot in the first inning against Bud Norris. He came to the plate in the second with a chance at history, but he insisted that wasn't on his mind.

"I hit three (Wednesday) and I wasn't even thinking about hitting a home run, so why would I think about hitting another one?" Gonzalez said.

With Dexter Fowler on second, Norris went to 2-0 on Gonzalez before the Astros decided to intentionally walk him.

"I can promise you, I wasn't going to give him the take sign if he went to 3-0," Tracy said.

Gonzalez also doubled in the fourth, singled in the eighth, stole a base and scored three runs. The talented left fielder is 13 for 20 with six homers and 10 RBIs in his last five games.

"He's been an absolute terror," Norris said. "Good luck trying to cool him off."

Marco Scutaro also homered for the Rockies, who had 15 hits overall and pounded Houston pitchers in the four-game sweep. Colorado finished the series with 40 runs and 56 hits after scoring just 20 runs in its previous five home games.

Every position player had at least one hit Thursday.

"CarGo's in another world, Cuddy puts in a good at-bat every time and drives somebody in," Rockies starter Jeremy Guthrie said. "One through eight is a tough at-bat right now."

J.D. Martinez homered for the Astros, who have lost six straight.

The Rockies didn't need Tulowitzki in the series finale. They led 4-0 before Norris (5-2) recorded an out in the first inning.

Colorado led 5-0 after one and added four more in the second before Norris was replaced by Rhiner Cruz. Norris allowed seven hits in 1 2-3 innings and his ERA jumped from 3.34 to 4.52.

"Tough start. They've scored 15 runs in the first inning these four games," Houston manager Brad Mills said. "That'll put you behind the 8-ball pretty early. That was troublesome."

Martinez homered in the second to get Houston on the board. Juan Castro had an RBI triple, pinch-hitter Justin Maxwell doubled in a run and Jose Altuve added an RBI single in the Astros' three-run fourth.

Cuddyer had an RBI single in the fourth and Scutaro connected in the sixth, helping Guthrie (3-3) earn his first win since April 22. The right-hander, who was 0-2 with a 4.41 ERA since returning from a right shoulder strain, gave up five runs and 12 hits in seven innings.

"I gave up a lot of hits, maybe a career high, but our bats have been really hot, gave us a nice cushion and continued to tack on, which is so big," Guthrie said. "We outscored them tonight."

NOTES: The Rockies activated INF Chris Nelson (wrist) from the 15-day DL to take Tulowitzki's place on the roster. ... Houston sent pitcher J.A. Happ home early Thursday in anticipation of his start against Cincinnati on Friday. ... The Rockies will start LHP Josh Outman (0-1) in Friday's series opener against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
