Bomb squads disarm traps at Colo. suspect's apt

AURORA, Colo. (AP) ? Authorities on Saturday began disarming trip wires and explosive devices "set up to kill" inside the apartment of the suspect in the deadly Colorado movie theater shooting, hoping to find clues to his motive without destroying key evidence in a blast.

Federal authorities detonated one small explosive and disarmed another inside James Holmes' suburban Denver apartment, including one that emits a shock wave and water, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press. The official spoke on condition of anonymity, citing the ongoing investigation into the shooting rampage that killed 12 people and wounded 58.

Holmes' apartment appears to have three types of explosives ? jars filled with accelerants, chemicals that would explode when mixed together and more than 30 "improvised grenades," the official said.

Makeshift memorials sprang up for the victims, including a 6-year-old girl, an aspiring sportscaster and a man celebrating his 27th birthday, after police grimly went door to door with a list of those killed in the worst mass shooting in recent U.S. history. Holmes, 24, was arrested early Friday outside the Aurora theater after witnesses say he unleashed gunfire and gas canisters on a crowd of moviegoers watching the midnight showing of the new Batman film, "The Dark Knight Rises."

The devices in Holmes' booby-trapped apartment were "set up to kill that person and that could have been a police officer executing a search warrant," Aurora police Sgt. Cassidee Carlson said. Police planned an intricate procedure to disarm the possible weapons without destroying evidence that could be in the apartment.

"We don't want to lose evidential value," Carlson said.

Federal officials said in a bulletin obtained by The Associated Press that they still hadn't determined a motive for the suspect as families grieved and others waited at hospitals, where seven of the wounded remained in critical condition on Saturday.

In his Saturday radio address, President Barack Obama urged Americans to pray "for the victims of this terrible tragedy, for the people who knew them and loved them, for those who are still struggling to recover."

The victims included 23-year-old Micayla Medek, said Anita Busch, the cousin of Medek's father. The family took the news hard, but knowing her fate after waiting without word brought them some peace, Busch said.

"I hope this evil act, that this evil man doesn't shake people's faith in God," she said.

Besides Medek, relatives confirmed that Alex Sullivan and Jessica Ghawi were among those killed, Sullivan on his 27th birthday.

Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said Holmes used a military-style semi-automatic rifle, a shotgun and a pistol to open fire on the unsuspecting theater-goers. He had bought the weapons at local gun stores within the last two months. He also recently purchased 6,000 rounds of ammunition over the Internet, the chief said.

The suspect's stellar academic record, apparent shy demeanor and lack of a criminal background made the attack even more difficult to fathom.

It also wasn't known why the suspect chose a movie theater to stage the assault, or whether he intended some twisted, symbolic link to the film's violent scenes.

The Batman movie, the last in the trilogy starring Christian Bale, opened worldwide Friday with midnight showings in the U.S. The plot has the villain Bane facing Bale's Caped Crusader with a nuclear weapon that could destroy all of fictional Gotham.

The Dark Knight Rises" earned $30.6 million in Friday morning midnight screenings, and, according to industry estimates, roughly $75-77 million on the day. That put it on track for a weekend total of around $165 million, which would be the second highest opening weekend ever, following "The Avengers."

Warner Bros. has announced it would forgo the usual revenue reports until Monday out of respect for the victims. Sony, Disney and Universal also said they would delay reporting box office receipts until Monday, a day later than the routine Sunday releases for Hollywood.

In New York City, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said: "It clearly looks like a deranged individual. He has his hair painted red. He said he was the Joker, obviously the enemy of Batman."

Oates would not confirm that information, but did say he spoke to Kelly. Asked whether Holmes had makeup to look like the Joker, Oates said: "That to my knowledge is not true."

Near the entrance to the theater's parking lot, a makeshift memorial of 12 candles sat in a row alongside piles of flowers. Up the hill from the theater, about 20 pastors led a vigil for 350 people, some hugging and crying. A sign read, "7/20. Gone Not Forgotten."

An emotional Gov. John Hickenlooper said earlier Friday that people would not be defined by the tragedy.

"We are clear that we are going to rise back and lift ourselves above this," he said.

A federal law enforcement official said Holmes bought a ticket to the movie, went into the theater as part of the crowd and propped open an exit door as the movie was playing. The suspect then donned protective ballistic gear and opened fire, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the investigation.

Authorities said Holmes shot scores of people, picking off victims who tried to flee. At least one person was struck in an adjacent theater by gunfire that went through the wall. Adding to the terror and chaos were two gas canisters thrown by the suspect that filled the theater with smoke.

Tanner Coon, a 17-year-old Aurora resident who was watching the film with two friends, said he first thought the gunshots were firecrackers. When he realized what was happening, he ducked between seats and waited for the shooter to bark demands.

"When is he going to start telling us what to do? When is this going to become a hostage situation?" Coon said.

When the firing ended, Coon said he started running up the row but slipped in blood and fell on a woman who was lying on the ground. He tried shaking her, he said, but she didn't respond, so he left her behind and ran from the theater.

The shooting was the worst in the U.S. since the Nov. 5, 2009, attack at Fort Hood, Texas. An Army psychiatrist was charged with killing 13 soldiers and civilians and wounding more than two dozen others. It was the deadliest in Colorado since the 1999 attack at Columbine High School, where two students killed 12 classmates and a teacher and wounded 26 others before killing themselves.

Holmes had enrolled last year in a neuroscience Ph.D. program at the University of Colorado-Denver, though he left last month for unknown reasons. In academic achievement, "he was at the top of the top," recalled Timothy P. White, chancellor at the University of California, Riverside, where Holmes earned his undergraduate degree before attending the Denver school.

Those who knew Holmes described him as a shy, intelligent person raised in California by parents who were active in their well-to-do suburban San Diego neighborhood. Holmes played soccer at Westview High School and ran cross-country before going to college.

Police released a statement from his family Friday that said, "Our hearts go out to those who were involved in this tragedy and to the families and friends of those involved."

San Bernardino mayor weeds with family at Wildwood Park

SAN BERNARDINO - As the city reels from its preparations for bankruptcy, Mayor Pat Morris says residents can start to turn the city around with small acts to improve their neighborhoods.

He and his wife, Sally, put their trowels where their mouths were Saturday morning, spending several hours weeding and making other improvements at Wildwood Park, where they've worked off and on to maintain the front entrance since the city's first Beautification Day in September.

"It's wonderful if people would adopt one of our public spaces," Morris said. "A median, an area of park - something to give a sense that we're orderly, and we're engaged, and we care about this place."

Wildwood Park, on the northeast corner of Waterman Avenue and 40th Street, is one of several parks under the supervision of a single worker after a 40 percent reduction to the Parks Department, Morris said.

"They need all the help they can get," he said. "This is a way leaders and others, if they truly are committed to this city, can show it."

Sally Morris said she has volunteered at the park several times this past week and as often as she has had time since the Beautification Day.

"People come by and offer water or a thumbs-up - it's very encouraging," she said, adding that one woman said she would join in starting next weekend. "We've gotten a lot done, but not as much as we first thought we would. Look at the size of some of these weeds - we can't brag too much."

The mayor said family members have planted drought-resistent plants - paid for by a Home Depot grant - at the park's entrance, and painted, weeded and swept the area.

In my 20 years of training, coaching and selling, I have worked with 1,000's of sales professionals and observed them selling and negotiating in classroom role-plays and in actual client meetings. Regardless of the industry or the negotiation setting, there are five behaviors that top performers consistently demonstrate. To be effective and maintain the competitive edge, you need to be able to demonstrate the ability to do the following:

#1 - Learn - Before you move from the selling phase to the negotiating phase of the sales cycle, learn as much as possible about the needs of your client. Make sure you understand how the client defines value. It is also important to know the client's business priorities and who/what you are competing with for the business. When you spend the proper amount of time learning, you can then negotiate from a point of value and not price.

#2 - Think before you speak - Always use pauses strategically. Many people feel the need to fill the void if no one is speaking. You do not need to fill the void and in fact, a pause is often a welcome break. Pausing is critical especially after the other person has asked you to make a concession.

#3 - Get all the cards on the table - Do not give up anything before you know everything. If you give something up too early, you may find that later on you did not need to make the concession. For example, let's say that in the beginning of the negotiation, you concede on price and drop it by 5% to keep the customer happy. Then, later on you find out that the customer wants the order rushed and that time is more important than money. It is very difficult to go back on the original concession. You may end up giving something up in addition to the fee.

#4 - Move slowly - If you want to build a relationship with this person, do not rush to come to agreement. When negotiators rush, they make mistakes and mistakes cost money! Move slowly both in speech and in changing the agreement.

#5 - Maintain confident body language - If your client pushes back on terms or price, ensure that your body language does not give the appearance of a lack of confidence or a belligerent attitude. Do not cross your arms, move your chair back or scrunch your forehead. Sit up straight, move forward slightly, and maintain a calm composure.

The resolution of yesteryear?s iPhone 3G may be good enough for eye doctors to make some diagnoses, according to a study that compared image quality displayed on the smartphone and a computer screen.

The researchers expected the computer images to be equal or superior to those on the popular handheld gadget, but instead found, on average, higher ratings assigned to the iPhone.

The findings don?t mean you get to skip your annual visit to the eye doctor any time soon, but it could aid emergency room decision making by sending snapshots to on-call eye doctors and even make remote diagnoses possible.

The Emory University-led team collected up-close and inner eye images of 350 patients complaining of headaches, blurry vision and other ailments. Two ophthalmologists were then asked to grade the images on general quality.

The eye doctors first viewed the images on a desktop computer; six weeks later they viewed 100 randomly chosen images on an iPhone 3G.

?Both reviewers tended to rate an image?s quality on the iPhone as superior to that same image viewed on the computer display,? the authors report in the journal Archives of Ophthalmology.?

The team, led by Cedric Lamirel, the iPhone?s superior display outweighed the disadvantage of a smaller screen and lower resolution.?

Before smartphones find their way into your eye doctor?s toolkit, more research is needed, but ?our results support the iPhone?s display as a potential component in a telemedicine network,? the researchers conclude.

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) ? Steve Nash knew the scene was more than a bit surreal when he stood in the Los Angeles Lakers' training complex, grinning and holding up a gold No. 10 jersey with his name on the back.

"Being here right now is something I never foresaw," Nash said Wednesday. "That (jersey) was a major hurdle for me just to get over visually as a player."

The two-time MVP will get used to it. After spending the past 16 years trying to beat L.A. in Phoenix and Dallas, Nash is switching teams to chase NBA titles alongside Kobe Bryant.

The Lakers formally welcomed Nash on Wednesday, a week after reaching a deal to get the superstar point guard from the Suns. After several days to get used to these developments, the 38-year-old Nash is eager to open another chapter in his remarkable career ? a chapter that will extend to at least 2015 under his new three-year, $27 million contract.

"It's a franchise that I think everybody would dream of playing for," Nash said, evincing his usual sartorial style in a dark-blue pinstriped suit with an open shirt collar and a red pocket square. "It's an exciting project, to say the least. ... I definitely never thought I'd play 19 years in the league, and I feel very fortunate that I have my health and, most importantly, have the desire to do it. I still enjoy pushing myself to get better and produce. I don't foresee that changing, and that's the key ingredient."

Nash wasn't the only person still surprised to find him in the Lakers' gym, where Metta World Peace got in a workout shortly before Nash arrived.

Los Angeles general manager Mitch Kupchak thought he had no chance to get Nash when Lakers owner Jim Buss encouraged him to call Nash's agent, Bill Duffy, in the opening minutes of free agency. Kupchak quickly learned his team fit Nash's two criteria as an impending free agent no longer in the Suns' plans: Nash wanted to be near his three children in Phoenix, and he wanted to play for a winner.

"I got to tick all the boxes here," Nash said. "It was definitely difficult. I knew in Phoenix that the Lakers have been the most hated team for 40 years, so I knew there would be a lot of people that wouldn't understand. But I've played a long time in this league, and I feel like I deserve to make a move that's best for me and my family.

"The people I really need not to disappoint are my children, and (I'd rather) tell them I'm going to go back East and see them three or four times a year than I'm going to be in L.A. and see them three or four times a month."

With the Lakers, he can also run pick-and-rolls with the fifth-leading scorer in NBA history while feeding two of the league's best 7-footers, whoever they may be by September. Kupchak refused to talk about the Lakers' entry in the Dwight Howard sweepstakes while showing off the prize he already won.

Bryant, Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum are already salivating at the prospect of seeing Nash every night. The eight-time All-Star already is fifth on the NBA's career list with 9,916 assists, and his incredibly accurate jumper should fill a major Lakers need.

The Lakers' triangle offense under former coach Phil Jackson didn't really require a traditional point guard, but the Lakers' deficiencies in playmaking and perimeter shooting have been obvious for several years. Kupchak's deal to get Chris Paul last December was blocked by commissioner David Stern, but when Nash's geographical desires meshed with Los Angeles' trade exception from shipping out Lamar Odom last year, the Lakers had their man.

"I look at him as somebody that can run the show ? the maestro, the conductor, however you want to say it," Kupchak said. "There's certain guys at the top of the list. It just didn't seem possible we would have a shot at a player like that ... but I'll be the first to admit that we have a very attractive franchise in a very exciting city. Players enjoy playing for the Lakers."

The Canadian hero born in South Africa to British parents is one of his sport's most popular athletes worldwide, and his star scarcely waned while the Suns were "pretty mediocre the last couple of years," as Nash described it. He's joining Bryant, another global superstar who inspires more polarizing feelings than the kid who emerged from Santa Clara to become a highly improbable multiple MVP.

Nash has played with big names before, from Dirk Nowitzki to Shaquille O'Neal. He said he hopes playing in Bryant's backcourt will allow him to "(take) some pressure off Kobe."

"He's had to take on so much that it would be nice for him to get a few easy baskets, not have to expend so much energy," Nash added. "Hopefully I can spread the floor a little bit with my shooting ability, give Andrew and Pau a little more room to roam."

Kupchak said the Lakers aren't done making moves this summer, and he planned to talk with Duffy, who also represents big man Jordan Hill. There's also the possibility of pursuing veteran Grant Hill, who has said he's considering joining Nash in the move west from Phoenix to Los Angeles.

Grant Hill would have to get used to the sight of his point guard in a No. 10 jersey, since the Lakers retired his traditional No. 13 in honor of a guy named Wilt.

But Nash is a lifelong soccer addict whose first word was "goal," and he said he chose No. 10 to honor Glenn Hoddle, Zinedine Zidane and other playmakers who wore the number. Everything might be new for Nash in Los Angeles, but even at this late date in a career that started in 1996 ? the same season as Bryant ? he's eager for the challenge.

"I look forward to learning all these personalities and making them work together," Nash said. "And I'm sure I'll make friends."

It takes a lifetime to build up social capital, but now it's easier than ever to burn it all to earn some discounts via new ecommerce discovery site affiliate programs. But why should Fab, or The Fancy, or other Pinter-esque services care? They're not the ones getting spammed. It's Facebook and Twitter's problem. But that's bullshit. By incentivizing aggressive sharing with monetary discounts -- not a spot on some leaderboard, or (gasp!) a sense of altruism, these ecommerce sites are growing and making money at the expense of financially-strapped users and the social networks they frequent.

LG apparently working on a 10-megapixel Android device

It seems that LG are not completely happy with their latest offering, the Optimus 4X LTE. The Chosunilbo is reporting that the South Korean manufacturer is already working on a quad-core 10 megapixel Android device to compete with the ever evolving market.

LG's sales and market presence have been massively overshadowed by the Samsung Galaxy S III and HTC's One X. The company already has subsidiaries that supply other smartphone manufactures (LG Display, LG Innotek & LG Chem) including Apple but LG's chairman Koo Bon-Moo has stated that they are not "making enough' of the technology.

With LG shipping just 3.7% of industry wide shipments in Q1 21012 they have a lot of catching up to do. Samsung came in at 30.6% which must have really upset LG as they are both South Korean companies.

While this report is more that likely correct, it shouldn't be astonishing news that LG are working on a quad-core phone with a better camera. With the camera being one of the most used features on a smartphone these days all manufactures will be striving to provide the best camera possible, so the LG news isn't really that shocking.

I wonder if Nokia will consider sharing their camera technology with other companies? If the price is right I could handle an Android device with a 41 megapixel sensor for sure. Could you?

All manufacturers are having to look at downsizing their engines in the interests of reducing CO2 emissions, but a 3-cylinder, 1-litre engine in a Ford Focus sounds a bit extreme, especially when people are used to 1.6 or 2.0-litre capacities in a Focus. Ford has gone down the route of turbocharging the smaller engine to achieve more power and torque, and the result is much better than anyone could have imagined.

Taking the new 1-litre EcoBoost engine aside, the Focus is still a Focus. That means a practical five-door, five-seat family hatchback. This new model is more refined than the previous generation, however to achieve this it has traded some of its dynamic sharpness. The new model also has a lot more ?tech?, such as in the area of driver assistance systems. What you can?t argue with is that the Focus has consistently been one of the UK?s best selling cars, usually vying for top honours with its smaller family member the Fiesta.

When you first sit in the car you wouldn?t know that this has a new 3-cylinder, 1-litre, turbocharged engine, as the interior is no different from the rest of the Focus range, although the detail does depend on what spec you choose.?

Our Titanium test car had lots of equipment, including a better-looking central dashboard area than lower-spec cars, but this centre-console is rather busy, with lots of switches and controls in a small space. The car was also fitted with satnav, which generally worked fine, with useful features such as the display of current speed limits, but in terms of entering destination details, there are certainly more intuitive satnavs.

As soon as we got onto a motorway, the steering wheel started vibrating when crossing white lines. This is supposed to happen as a safety feature to warn you that you?re changing lanes - one of the many new driver assistance features ? but this was actually rather annoying, and it was somewhat of a challenge to go into the car?s menus and sub-menus to find a way to reduce this sensation. You also need to navigate through various menu items to reset the car?s fuel consumption figure.

Ford Focus 1-litre EcoBoost Driving Experience

When you start up the new 1-litre EcoBoost the first thing that strikes you is how amazingly quiet the engine is. It?s a struggle to even hear it at standstill. In fact the fan for the heating and ventilation system, even when it?s on its minimum setting, sounds really loud because the engine is so quiet. Switch the fan off completely and you?ll be amazed at how quiet the car is (until you switch on the indicators, which will deafen you).

When you accelerate, the engine still sounds refined, but it changes to a fantastic throaty noise, reminiscent of more sporty machinery such as a Porsche boxer powerplant. Once you?re at a constant speed then it settles down again, and it?s incredibly quiet when sitting on the motorway at 70mph. The incredible silence at these sorts of speeds means that it?s amazingly easy to speak to people on a Bluetoothed-phone.

People will understandably have concerns about the ability of a 1-litre engine to provide a family hatchback with sufficient performance, but Ford?s engineers seemed to have cracked this. The engine works well and is very responsive, not only around town, but even on the motorway.?

It even woks well on the racetrack? yes, during our time with the car we had the opportunity to take the 1-litre EcoBoost around the Cholmondeley Pageant of Power circuit ? watch the video. Apart from a slight delay with the throttle response ? not something that you notice on the road - the car was fun to take around the circuit. The light weight of the 1-litre engine assists with the agile driving experience. The six-speed manual ?box is also slick, which is a good match for the efficient-feeling engine. The Focus also has sharp steering, and it combines a comfortable ride with good handling, so it all adds up to a great package to drive, especially if corners are involved.

Ford Focus 1-litre EcoBoost Economy and Emissions

The new 1-litre EcoBoost unit is one of Ford?s engines that carries the ECOnetic Technology branding. It includes features that optimise its efficiency such as Smart Regenerative Charging, Auto-Start-Stop, Powershift, ECO Mode, Active Grille Shutter, Gearshift Indicator, EPAS Power Assisted Steering, Low Resistance Tyres and Improved Aerodynamics.?

The official economy and emissions figures for the Focus with the new 1-litre EcoBoost engine are 56.5mpg and 114g/km CO2. These are certainly impressive figures for a turbocharged petrol-engined family hatchback, and if you did achieve these figures, you?d be looking at a driving range of over 600 miles. We?ve already seen that there?s no compromise in the area of performance, so what?s the catch? Well, in our experience there?s always one catch with downsized petrol engines ? the real-life economy tends to fall well short of the official mpg figure.?

Car engines, helped by features such as auto stop-start, are designed to do well in the official NEDC mpg test, which is conducted with relatively low loads. If you drive in a similar way to the test cycle then you may get reasonable levels of economy. However in reality most people will accelerate more vigorously and drive at higher speeds, and the laws of physics mean that when trying to propel an object weighing 1.25 tonnes and taking the engine out of its optimum efficiency range, the fuel economy will start to drop.

During our test of the car we achieved a best of 55mpg when driving very carefully, which is very close to the official figure. However our overall figure, which included much motorway driving at around 70mph, was 38mpg. This is well short of the 56.5mpg target, and as explained above, this doesn?t really surprise us.

Ford Focus 1-litre EcoBoost Price, Equipment and Model Range

There are two versions of this 1.0 EcoBoost engine available in the Focus ? the 125PS version as tested, with emissions of 114g/km CO2, and a 100PS version, with even lower emissions of 109g/km CO2. There?s also the 1.6 TDCi diesel engine, with power outputs varying from 95, 105 or 115PS, and emissions ranging from 109 to 99 to just 89g/km CO2. All these engines, petrol and diesel, as well as a 1.6-litre EcoBoost petrol unit, come under Ford?s ECOnetic technology branding.

You can specify different levels of Focus trim, the Titanium spec of our test car being more expensive than the Zetec option.

Our base test car cost ?19,195, and on top of this it had options including Driver Assistance Pack, comprising of Active City Stop, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keeping Aid, Traffic Sign Recognition, Driver Alert, Auto High Beam, Blind Spot Info (all these features cost ?850), Sony DAB Navigation System (?750), Pearlescent Paint (?745), City Pack - Rear Park Assist and powerfold mirrors (?350), 17" Alloy Wheels (?300) and Door Edge Protectors (?50), taking the price to ?22,240. This is quite a lot for a 1-litre petrol hatchback.

The Ford Focus 1-litre EcoBoost is a highly impressive car and it shows that petrol engines are now a viable alternative to diesels. The car is incredibly quiet, refined and smooth. It has good performance, it?s good to drive, and it?s comfortable. It?s also a practical five-door, five-seat family hatchback. It has excellent official economy and emissions figures of 56.5 mpg and 114g/km CO2.?

Because of all this, the Ford Focus 1-litre EcoBoost gets a Green Car Guide rating of 9 out of 10. Apart from the fact that in this spec, ?22,240 is quite a lot for a 1-litre petrol hatchback, the only area where it falls down is its real-life economy. If you drive the Focus very carefully then it will be possible to achieve over 50mpg. However the reality is that most people don?t have the time or the inclination to perform eco-driving all the time, and therefore the car is likely to be driven out of its zone of optimum efficiency, and fuel economy is likely to fall, possibly to around 40mpg. This is still good for a turbocharged petrol-engined family hatchback, and for use in urban areas, it?s a great car, and one that you should consider over a diesel. It even has a super-low BIK charge of just 10%, making it very appealing for company car drivers.

However if you?re looking to buy a car that will spend much of its life completing longer journeys, then a diesel Focus will be cheaper to run. Just don?t drive the Focus 1-litre EcoBoost first, because after this, all diesel cars will sound noisy and unrefined. This would be even more the case if Ford finds a way to make the car?s ventilation fan quieter, when this Focus would genuinely rival the silence of electric cars.
