Blame Canada: Winds to end heat wave, spur storms

Nearly every state in the U.S. is forecasted to experience temperatures in the 90s or above, as doctors issue warnings about heat stroke. NBC's Peter Alexander reports and TODAY's Al Roker gives the forecast.

Cooler winds sweeping south from Canada are set to ease a heat wave that has blasted the Midwest and Northeast for over a week but experts warned Thursday they could also trigger "severe thunderstorms" and tornadoes.

Forecasters said the winds would begin?hitting the dome of high pressure sitting in the Ohio Valley that has seen temperatures spike into triple digits in many cities.

However, while storms were expected in the Midwest on Thursday widespread relief was unlikely in the Northeast until Saturday.

"The heat wave remains in full swing with high temperatures returning to the upper 80s and 90s across most of the [Northeast]," said?Kevin Roth, lead meteorologist for the?Weather Channel. "Friday will be hot again across the region, but a cold front plunges southward Saturday bringing an end to this heat wave."

However, Roth added that the cooler winds were likely to spark thunderstorms late Thursday?in Minnesota, Michigan and Wisconsin before moving across to Chicago, Detroit and possibly Cleveland and Indianapolis on Friday.

He said that "damaging winds, large hail and tornadoes" were also possible.

Roth added that scattered showers and thunderstorms could "bring a bit of heat relief to Upstate New York and New England" on Thursday.

New York City's medical examiner recorded the first fatality caused by hot weather on Wednesday,?NBC New York?reported.

Accumulations of up to three inches of rain were also forecast in west Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi and east Louisiana, which could lead to some flash flooding.

Roth predicted that next week should be more bearable.

"Temperatures should return to more average levels, so it will still be hot, but not as hot," he added.
